Today (January 14th, 2026) is I Love Public Schools Day, a day celebrated across the region to recognize the important role public schools play in the lives of students, families, and communities.
In the Sioux Falls School District, our schools reflect our community and work to support every student who walks through the door. Each day, the District serves more than 24,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, along with nearly 900 preschool-aged children who are building a strong foundation through early learning and intervention services.
Our students bring a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives to the classroom. Nearly 45% of students identify as coming from diverse backgrounds, and families in our District speak 115 different languages. Public schools bring these differences together, creating learning environments where students grow academically and learn from one another.
Public education is about meeting students where they are. At the SFSD, nearly 4,400 students receive special education services, and approximately 3,000 students receive additional support through 504 Plans, ensuring equitable access to learning. Many students also receive meal assistance, with schools and community partners working together to help ensure students are ready to learn each day.
Behind every student is a team of dedicated adults. More than 3,600 staff members support students across our District, including nearly 2,000 classroom teachers, 65% of whom hold advanced degrees.
The impact of public schools can be seen in MANY ways! Through our strong graduation rates (90%), academic achievement, and nationally recognized accomplishments. It can also be seen in everyday moments, whether it's a student gaining confidence, a teacher offering encouragement, or a school community coming together to support one another. It's all happening in our public schools!
On I Love Public Schools Day, we celebrate the students, staff, families, and community partners who make public education possible. Thank you for being part of what makes the Sioux Falls School District a place where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to succeed!
